Netherlands is a small country but there are a lot of expats living here, especially in the crowded Amsterdam. But there is more in Netherlands that just coffeeshop and Red Light District, so we collected some things that only the people who live in the Netherlands will understand.
Yes, sun is an option here, you won't see it often. So when it happens people run to the canals or, the luckiest, next to the beach to enjoy every single second of it. If you decided to live in a city like Amsterdam, it might be common to go to the canals with some food and drinks, and friends of course, but where it gets really cool is when you rent a boat and go trough the canal with a couple of heineken box with you.
Trust me 😀
When it gets sunny after months of rain and cold
Dutch use agenda, really a lot. They plan everything and so you will have to do if you want to "survive" the social life in the Netherlands. You might be invited for a birthday party even 3 months in advance, and so for Christmas. So want o not you must use an agenda.
Don't expect to spend a lot of money for your colleague's birthday, 1 or 2 euros are enough, but most of the times you won't even buy a present, so don't expect one when it's your turn! 🙂
Anyway there is something that cannot be miss at the birthday and is ..
Yes, dutch love cakes and me too! Birthday or new contract at work? Cake! At home? Make cake and coffee and invite your neighbours! Here a good "guide" to survive a dutch birthday.
What? Yes, that's it. Go in a bar, if you are lucky enough the waitress cross soon your eyes you can order a beer. She will take a dirty glass of beer from a previous client, rinse it and then give it to you. That's Netherlands. 🙂
Not surprising many toilet are not for free. There you will find a lady or man expecting from you to pay. Some toilets are really nice and clean, like the ones in the Park next to the Van Gogh Museum, but they will cost you even 50 cents.
No one speaks dutch in the Netherlands, seriously. Amsterdam has even english has official language. But
if you are not an english speaker sure your english will improve it 😀
Planning to meet your friends during the huge celebration of the King's day? Well, plan it well because you won't find them easily. This is the big day where every dutch dress orange and goes out, in this day you will realise how overcrowded this country is. Ah .. forget about public transports of course.
What is Borrels? Well .. the word itself means a group of selected invited people having drinks> Borrels is the friday drink after work with your colleagues or the evenings with your friends. It does not matter who is with you, just drink! 😀
